Why giant lizard?

In the news section on october 2nd 2006 I wrote that I had decided to name my website giant lizard 'for no reason'.
That is not true. In fact there are several reasons.

The first and most important one is, that I was looking for a name that would be memorized easily. Something that creates a picture in everyone's head. That could also have been 'blue banana' or 'rusty bicycle'. But I stumbled upon giant lizard and I had great images in my head which leads me to the second reason.
One thing I thought of was a movie I had seen as a child called 'Panik in New York'. It was about a 'dinosaur' looking

just like a huge lizard running wild in New York. What I didn't know was that this black-and-white movie had been made in 1953, one year before 'Godzilla'. It turned out that it's original title was 'The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms' and that the lizard had been animated by Ray Harryhausen!

If you are an animator or you like old monster movies you probably know that Ray Harryhausen was one of the pioneers of stop-motion animation. So there I saw another connection which lead me to naming my animation portfolio like that.
By the way, after Roland Emmerich had done his remake

of 'Godzilla' in 1998 he was often criticized that he had in fact shot a remake of 'The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms'.

The last thing is, that I like dinosaurs which are often referred to as 'giant lizards' (which in my opinion lets you get a wrong picture of what these animals must have been like. I guess giant chickens would be more appropriate in many cases).
As you see in my showreel and gallery, I already animated some pterosaurs, and hopefully will be animating some dinosaurs in the next months. But I'm afraid I won't be that much of a pioneer! I hope you enjoy my site anyway!
